Serving Families in Multiple Ways

As we celebrate our 10~20~30 milestones this year, (10 years ReStore in Camrose, 20 Habitat in Camrose, building our 29th & 30th homes) we also celebrate the ways we serve families in the community.

1. Affordable Home Ownership

We all want strength, stability and self-reliance for our families.  Habitat’s Affordable Home Ownership program empowers families to take care of themselves and build their own brighter futures by owning their own home.

Having a safe and secure place to live benefits everyone in the family and community.

Moving into a Habitat home can happen in two ways:

Moving in to a new home – This is normally what people think about when they think ‘Habitat.’ Along with numerous volunteers and contractors, families help directly in the construction of their home. Upon completion, a home dedication ceremony is held and the keys to the home are passed on to the family.

In its 20 years in the community, Habitat Camrose has served 30 families the keys to new Habitat homes. An average of 2 families per year.

Moving in to a refurbished home – The purpose behind the Habitat program is to be able to give a family a hand up through home ownership, so that they can build equity in their homes and move on to another home and a traditional mortgage. When families are able to accomplish this, the Habitat homes are refurbished and serve a new Habitat partner family, who then sign a mortgage with Habitat Camrose.

2. International Work ~ Home for a Home – Habitat for Humanity has always supported international work.  In 2015 Habitat Canada officially launched the Home for Home model of tithing in Canada. The goal is to generate $2500 for every home built locally to support the construction of a home internationally.  You can read about the results of our international work in the 2015 Impact Report included in this newsletter.

Habitat Camrose has tithed for 30 homes internationally over our 20 years in Camrose.

In 2016 we celebrate with the community the milestones that Habitat has made in Camrose.  We celebrate you, the volunteers, donors, contractors, and those that attend our fundraising events.  All of you make Habitat possible in Camrose. And most of all, we celebrate with you the difference we have been able to make in the lives of families in our community.

We thank you for your ongoing support.

Celebrating With Habitat in 2016

Habitat for Humanity Camrose is happy to to celebrate 3 milestones with you in the upcoming year. 2016 is the year of 10-20-30: 10 years for ReStore in Camrose, 20 years for Habitat in Camrose, and the building of our 29th and 30th homes. In the 5 years I have been with Habitat for Humanity Camrose, I have been blessed to have worked with many dedicated volunteers and generous donors that have made this organization what it is today. I want to say thank you to each and every one of you.

When you support Habitat as a donor or volunteer, you help provide a stable foundation for families to make a positive and lasting change.  For partner families, Habitat homeownership results in greater employment stability, improved health behaviours, greater community engagement and better education for their children. By giving your time and money, you transform families’ lives.

You are also helping us build more than homes.  Giving to Habitat also builds stronger communities.  A study by the Boston Consulting Group concluded that Habitat’s home-ownership program generates $175,000 of total social benefit per partner family.  Since 1996, you have helped us build 28 homes in Camrose, which amounts to $4,900,000 of social benefit for the community! When you give to Habitat, your generosity multiplies.

Building Futures: The Garcia Family – 2015 Partner Family

Partnering with Habitat for Humanity has given us the opportunity to have confidence in owning a home without having to worry about paying a mortgage beyond our financial capabilities.

We have been given the privilege of spending our time where it matters most, raising our family.  It encourages us to look forward to giving our kids a better future by providing a safe and comfortable haven where they can grow up.

Working hand in hand with all the staff and volunteers has given us the chance to grow in moral, social, intellectual and emotional aspects of our life and that is something that we aim to pass on to our kids.  We thank God for everything, that together, hand in hand, we can build homes, raise hope and make a significant difference in hardworking family’s lives.

2nd Annual BUILDING HOPE Fundraiser

Building Hope is an annual fundraiser for Habitat Camrose.  It is a fun and engaging way to raise funds to build homes for hardworking families in need. The event replicates a little bit of what Habitat does: building together as a community for a common cause.

For the 2nd Annual BUILDING HOPE Fundraiser we have partnered with UFA and CCHS to help build hope for even more Camrose families.  On Saturday, Sept 27, 2014, teams of four will compete to build the best grain bin bottom and raise the most money for Habitat Camrose.

UFA provides the building materials, we provide the labour. The more volunteers we have the more we can raise.

Volunteers work together to build a bin bottom.

FCC Volunteers work together to build a bin bottom.

Instead  of running or walking, with Habitat for Humanity you come out and swing a hammer.  Here’s how it works:

  • Register a team of four by September 19th by contacting Habitat at 780-679-0369.
  • Individuals on your team then collect pledges to raise money for Habitat. Each team must raise $1000 total to participate.
  • Sept 27th, 9:30 a.m. we gather at UFA to build bin bottoms.
  • Teams compete against other teams to build the best bin bottom and have the most team spirit,  while having raised the most amount of money for Habitat.

By registering a team, you’ll be helping Habitat Camrose provide affordable housing options for Camrose families that might otherwise not be able to purchase their own home.  Individuals can come together to make a team, and it’s also a great corporate team building event  to get staff out of the office and bond by working together to give back to the community.

Don’t have any construction experience? No problem!  All materials and tools will be provided and there will be supervisors to help guide you and your team along.

Come out and be a Hope Builder!  We look forward to hearing from you.
