Stockmen’s Chophouse owners Jennifer Routhier and Jesse Chambers

Stockmen’s Chophouse is a supporter of local businesses and local organizations. Both Jesse and myself appreciate and admire the hard work and experiences that Habitat brings to families.  There are a lot of people within arms length that need help and we think Habitat is one organization that works hard within the community at closing both social and economic gaps with families that might not get an opportunity like the one Habitat offers.

While getting to know Cody and Brenda we brainstormed and realized having a Gala Dinner could be a great way to promote Habitat to people that might not know a lot about the organization.  It will be different from our other themed dinners as we have a few surprised up our sleeve, and some fun ‘additions’ for the night. But what will remain the same is the exceptional food and wine that will be served as well as all the laughs and great memories.” ~Jennifer~

Volunteering on the Habitat Build Site

Individuals, groups or businesses can all be involved in the Habitat build.  It’s an exciting time to work alongside Partner Families building a future for a family and a better community in the process.

INDIVIDUALS

As an individual, volunteering on the build site is an excellent way to share the skills you already have or learn new ones and learn about the build process.  If you have time to volunteer one day, one week, or multiple days, we welcome you!  We especially encourage individuals who can volunteer on a consistent basis (ie. 2 hours every Monday afternoon, or a full day every Wednesday). Our timeline is reasonably flexible to fit yours to make it the easiest for everyone involved.  If this sounds interesting to you and you’re excited to learn and share, we would love to hear from you!April 25, 2014 - Jess Lind (1)April 22, 2014 (1)

ADOPT-A-DAY

Adopt-A-Day is a unique teambuilding opportunity for businesses or groups to participate in a project that builds a longlasting solution to poverty in our community.  Teams will work hands-on building homes for hardworking local families while covering some of the costs for the day.

Work alongside the Partner Families

Your business, church group, or service club can strengthen bonds, share their knowledge, and learn new skills together while giving back to the community.

Adopt-A-Day is an investment in Habitat for Humanity, your team, and your community.  Together we will empower deserving families to prepare for the future and pursue their dreams by giving them a ‘hand up’ into the safety and security of home ownership.

New Year, New Beginnings

With the commencement of a new year, there have been new things happening at the ReStore.

To start with, the ReStore is excited to welcome a new manager, Peter Blais, who started with the organization in January. Peter and his wife Sandra hail from Ottawa and recently relocated to Camrose to be nearer their children who now live in western Canada. Peter brings to the table extensive experience in managing medium sized organizations as well as numerous years in sales.  Peter appreciates meeting ReStore customers and friends so when you are in the store feel free to introduce yourself.

In January 2015 the ReStore welcomed new manager, Peter Blais.

“The first thing you may notice as you near the ReStore is the new signage. The new sign is substantially larger than the previous sign making our location much more visible.2015-02-04 08.25.35

When you walk in the store you will also notice some changes. More floor space is now dedicated to the display of furniture. You will find an abundant selection of chairs, couches, desks, dressers and related items.  In addition we have added artificial plants to decorate the store which were generously donated by individuals from Camrose. We hope the new ambiance provides our shoppers with a more pleasant experience.

An interesting fact about our products is that 45% of our inventory is brand-new and generously donated to the ReStore from several retailers in the region.

I have enjoyed getting to know our dedicated staff and volunteers.  The success that we experience in the ReStore wouldn’t be possible without their knowledge, skills and time.

And it takes a lot of muscle to load and unload all the various donations. Thanks to Neil, Ben, Jim, Doug, Ray, Zack and Dennis we are able to efficiently move furniture and other products to and from the store.

Without our volunteers, ReStore would not be able to operate at the level that it does.

2nd Annual BUILDING HOPE Fundraiser

Building Hope is an annual fundraiser for Habitat Camrose.  It is a fun and engaging way to raise funds to build homes for hardworking families in need. The event replicates a little bit of what Habitat does: building together as a community for a common cause.

For the 2nd Annual BUILDING HOPE Fundraiser we have partnered with UFA and CCHS to help build hope for even more Camrose families.  On Saturday, Sept 27, 2014, teams of four will compete to build the best grain bin bottom and raise the most money for Habitat Camrose.

UFA provides the building materials, we provide the labour. The more volunteers we have the more we can raise.

Volunteers work together to build a bin bottom.

FCC Volunteers work together to build a bin bottom.

Instead  of running or walking, with Habitat for Humanity you come out and swing a hammer.  Here’s how it works:

  • Register a team of four by September 19th by contacting Habitat at 780-679-0369.
  • Individuals on your team then collect pledges to raise money for Habitat. Each team must raise $1000 total to participate.
  • Sept 27th, 9:30 a.m. we gather at UFA to build bin bottoms.
  • Teams compete against other teams to build the best bin bottom and have the most team spirit,  while having raised the most amount of money for Habitat.

By registering a team, you’ll be helping Habitat Camrose provide affordable housing options for Camrose families that might otherwise not be able to purchase their own home.  Individuals can come together to make a team, and it’s also a great corporate team building event  to get staff out of the office and bond by working together to give back to the community.

Don’t have any construction experience? No problem!  All materials and tools will be provided and there will be supervisors to help guide you and your team along.

Come out and be a Hope Builder!  We look forward to hearing from you.

A finished product!

A finished product!

2014 Habitat Home Dedication

The Home Dedication ceremony, Thursday, July 24, 2014 was a day of celebration, not only for two hardworking families, but  for the Camrose community as well.  With the help of many hands the 25th and 26th Habitat homes were completed and the house keys were officially handed over to the two Partner Families.

MLA Wetaskiwin-Camrose, Verlyn Olson, presents Tyson & Mackenzie Carroll the keys to their new home.

Members of the community, volunteers, business partners, contractors, and government officials were all in attendance for the celebration event. Thank you to the Honorable Verlyn Olson, MLA Wetaskiwin-Camrose, for presenting the keys to the Carroll family and to Camrose Mayor, Norm Mayer, for presenting to the Dzus family, as well as saying a few words.

People from all walks of life in Camrose participate in one form or another in the building of the Habitat homes. Whether it be through fundraising and donations, board and committee positions, hands-on work at the build site (no experience necessary), or through donating and shopping at the ReStore, it all plays a part of Habitat’s success in the community.  And all are invited to the Home Dedication each year!

The Home Dedication is a chance for everyone who took part in the building process to come together, network, and celebrate. It is also a great opportunity for those who are interested in volunteering in the future to come out and meet people and see the end result.

Click here for an interview with one of the partner families.

We congratulate the 25th and 26th Partner Families and the community who helped change their lives. With an estimated 700 households in Camrose that are caught in the cylce of poverty (this adds up to an average of one family on every block) Camrose continues to be an inspiringly supportive force behind Habitat for Humanity in recognizing a problem and motivating change. Home ownership provides a step out of poverty and a better future for families, through increased stability, safety, and opportunity. Habitat’s Affordable Home Ownership program truly builds hope through building homes.

Thank you Camrose!
